My New Quilting Tradition

As a quilter with a growing pile of WIPs (Works In Progress), I’ve decided to set aside one day each week to give those long-neglected projects some attention. That day is Wednesday!

There are just too many tempting fabrics and patterns out there—and now, WIP Wednesday is my excuse to enjoy them all without guilt.

This Week’s Focus: The 8 inch EPP Rose Block

While I may dabble in more than one WIP on any given Wednesday (because... of course I do), this week I’m working on my 8 inch EPP Rose Block. It's the perfect project to kick off my new ritual.

Cutting the Shapes on My Cricut

I'm using 1" fusible EPP shapes instead of traditional cardstock—huge time saver!

To make this block, you’ll need:

  • (1) hexagon

  • (18) half hexagons

  • (24) equilateral triangles

  • (6) 60-degree diamonds

I cut all my shapes using my Cricut Maker with a pink Fabric Grip Mat and rotary blade.

Cricut setting tip: I used the Fusible Fleece setting, which cuts better than the “interfacing” setting for these fusible shapes—even though they aren't technically fleece!

After cutting, I peeled away the excess stabilizer to reveal the clean-cut shapes—ready to go!

Best setting I've found in this case.....fusible fleece.....who knew??

In the following photo, for clarity, the excess stabilizer has been removed after cutting to show only the shapes.

Why I Love Fusible Shapes

Fusible shapes are a complete game changer! You can leave them in the finished block, which saves so much time. More quilting, less prep? Yes, please.

Cutting Fabric with Cricut

I also cut my fabric pieces on the Cricut Maker, making them about ⅜" larger than the EPP shapes.

Most of the fabric I’m using is from my Patches of Friendship quilt, so this is a great scrap-busting project too.

Glue Basting for the Win

I used a glue pen to baste all my shapes. While you can absolutely hand baste with thread, glue basting is easier on my hands and much faster.

That’s a Wrap for Today!

That’s about all I can manage today—but next, I’ll start joining the pieces together!
